Her Honor: An Afternoon with Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell

Saturday, October 14, 1:00 p.m., Downtown Library

Join us in conversation with Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell (retired) to talk about her recent memoir Her Honor: My Life on the Bench...What Works, What’s Broken, and How to Change It.

As the first African-American woman to serve as judge on the Superior Court of Northern California, Judge Cordell has a fascinating story. She will share her inspiring life's journey, leading to an extraordinary career on the bench, and culminating in her book. With candor, Judge Cordell will share many of the real cases over which she has presided, some with humor, some with serious concern, all with compassion and with an eye for justice for all. She will outline changes that can and should be made to improve our judicial system.

Renee Rettig, owner of Books on B in Hayward, will be in attendance with copies of Her Honor available for purchase at 10% discount. Judge Cordell will be happy to autograph books following her talk.

Masks not required, but recommended.

Register to attend at dkgcaeditor@gmail.com or 510-604-1744

Book Groups at the Library!

Did you know we have two book discussion groups at the library?

Our newest (or oldest, depending on how you look at it) is Mystery Book Club. Formerly hosted by our beloved Heidi Ontiveros, now happily retired, MBC has been given new life by librarian Kavita Sagran. And as she puts it, "We're ready to discuss murder!"

The first meeting happens on October 24 at 5:45 p.m. at the Weekes Branch Library, and the book we'll be talking about is Arsenic and Adobo: A Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery by Mia P. Manansala. Word is, it's wickedly funny and will keep you turning pages.

You can check out Arsenic and Adobo at the library, and if you have any questions you can send them to Kavita at kavita.sagran@hayward-ca.gov

Mystery Book Club

The Literary Corner, facilitated by librarian Ricardo Antoni, meets on (usually) the first Wednesday of the month. Ricardo focuses mostly on literary fiction and likes to pick shorter works--he knows sometimes time for reading can be limited! Past selections have included Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, Less by Andrew Sean Greer, and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin.

The next Literary Corner meeting is on Wednesday, November 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library. We'll be talking about The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. Copies are available to be checked out at the library, and you can contact Ricardo at ricardo.antoni@hayward-ca.gov with any questions.
