Education City in action: the Hayward Fire Department and Eden Area ROP 

A partnership between the Hayward Fire Department and Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is a quintessential example of how local government and educators can team up for the greater good. 

Since 2014, Hayward high school students have had the opportunity to receive hands on training in firefighting and emergency medical technician skills—and find a pathway to a career that otherwise might not have been available to them. 

Meanwhile, the Hayward Fire Department is getting access to homegrown talent as potential recruits while shaping the next generation of firefighting and emergency medical service professionals. 

It’s the realization of a vision of recently retired Hayward Fire Chief Eric Vollmer, and it is what is meant by Hayward being an Education City.
