Hayward annual minimum wage increase to occur Jan. 1

Minimum wage workers in Hayward are to receive a pay increase starting Jan. 1, 2023, under the City’s two-year-old local minimum wage ordinance.


On April 14, 2020, the Hayward City Council approved an ordinance to move the local minimum wage above the then current State of California minimum wage and provide for annual upward adjustments.


Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, larger employers with 26 or more employees are subject to a $16.34 per hour minimum wage—with subsequent annual increases of up to 5 percent based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the San Francisco-Oakland region.  Larger employers are defined as businesses with 26 or more full- or part-time workers including individuals employed outside of the city.


Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, smaller employers with 25 or fewer employees are subject to a $15.50 per hour minimum wage per State law and future increases in accordance with the State minimum wage law.  Smaller employers are businesses with 25 or fewer full- or part-time workers including individuals employed outside of the city.
