Panel Discussion & Author Talk: Voices of Partition
Saturday, August 23, 1:00 p.m., Downtown Library
Join us for a memorable Saturday afternoon as we explore the recently launched book, 10,000 Memories, through an author talk and stories of local community members impacted by the refugee crisis that unfolded during the 1947 Partition of India.
We will travel back in time to the Indian subcontinent vicariously through captivating stories shared by Mrs. Baljit Dhillon Vikram Singh, Mr. Ali Shan, and Maj. General Ravi Chopra. Some of their stories are featured in the book. Through their stories we will explore the era of the 1940s, World War II, Independence, and Partition, allowing you to hear first-hand accounts of this historic but little-documented time period that shaped world history.
Speaker bios:
Mr. Ali Shan was eight years old in 1947 and was orphaned during the violence of Partition. He migrated to Pakistan and later in life found profound healing from his trauma by forgiving those who harmed his family. He would like to share his message: to love everyone.
Mrs. Baljit Dhillon Vikram Singh was a seven-year-old girl when Partition took place. She describes her harrowing road journey to India through the violence and a brave act by her mother which saved her family from becoming victims.
Maj General Ravi Chopra was 8 years old when India's 1947 Partition took place. He describes being hit in the leg by a stray bullet during the Partition mayhem, and taking a train to India in which only his family survived.
Dr. Guneeta Singh Bhalla is Editor-in-chief of 10,000 Memories and the founder of The 1947 Partition Archive, which has helped preserve over 12,000 oral histories from Partition witnesses. She was previously a condensed matter physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. |

Mystery Book Club: Perfectly Nice Neighbors
Wednesday, August 20, 5:45 p.m., Downtown Library
This month's mystery is Perfectly Nice Neighbors by Kia Abdullah. About the book:
Salma Khatun is hopeful about Blenheim, the suburban development into which she, her husband, and their son have just moved. The Bangladeshi family needs a fresh start, and Blenheim feels like just the place. Soon after they move in, Salma spots her white neighbor, Tom Hutton, ripping out the anti-racist banner her son put in the front garden. Avoiding confrontation, Salma takes the banner inside and puts it in her window. But the next morning, she wakes up to find her window smeared with paint. When she does speak to Tom, battle lines are drawn between the two families. As racial and social tensions escalate and the stakes rise, it's clear that a reckoning is coming... And someone is going to get hurt.
