SF Opera Presents: Black Voices in American Opera
Saturday, June 15, 11:00 a.m.
Downtown Library
Cole Thomason-Redus, Educational Content Curator for the San Francisco Opera, presents a historical and musical survey of Black voices in American opera. Thomason-Redus will explore the careers and recordings of pioneers such as Camilla Williams, Simon Estes and Marian Anderson, and mid-century superstars such as Leontyne Price, along with other modern-day masters of the American opera stage.
In addition to celebrating these iconic voices, we will discuss the institutional and social barriers that have often existed within the art form, and the corrective and equity-based efforts being taken today as San Francisco Opera paves the way for a new century of opera in America.
Reservations, though not required, are recommended.

HPL Recommends: Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the one of the oldest known commemorations related to the abolition of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021. The word “Juneteenth” is a portmanteau, of the month “June” and the date “Nineteenth.” Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people of African descent located in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from the slavery system in the United States.
