Hayward receives grant for safe routes to schools infrastructures and bicycle incentives

The California Air Resources Board has announced that Hayward will receive $6.2 million in grant funds to provide Safe Routes to Schools infrastructure upgrades. The Safe Routes and Active Transportation for Schools and Underserved Communities Project will provide and promote safe, affordable active transportation while reducing transportation-related emissions for residents, especially in disadvantaged communities. Hayward celebrates Earth Day at Weekes Park!

The City of Hayward will host its Annual Citywide Clean-Up and Community Fair for Earth Day on April 20th at Weekes Park. The event will kick off with a litter clean-up at 8:30am. Volunteers come together to collect litter and abandoned debris in various neighborhoods throughout the City. The effort demonstrates that Hayward cares about the community and encourages residents to take care of their environment. The Clean-Up is followed by an Earth Day themed Community Fair! Including lunch for all Clean-Up volunteers, eco-friendly giveaways, music, and activities.

Hayward's Spring 2024 Compost Giveaway

On Saturdays May 4th and 18th, the City of Hayward will offer Hayward households free compost during the City’s Spring Compost Giveaway, where they can receive up to four bags of free, locally produced compost.


To help serve more community members and minimize traffic, this year’s compost giveaway has been split into two days. Please only attend the event on the date indicated on the flyer you receive in the mail. Mailers have been color coded to help ensure that each household attends on the correct day and will include a Product Waiver


On your designated date, head over to 1401 Golf Course Road with your Product Waiver, filled-out and signed, as well as a driver's license or a current Waste Management bill for proof of residency. This compost is made from organic waste sourced from Hayward residents and businesses, so take this opportunity to reap the benefits of correctly recycling your organic waste!

Seed Lending Library Presents: Backyard Chickens

If you’ve ever thought of owning chickens, on Saturday March 30th, the Hayward Public Library is hosting a Backyard Chicken information session. From 11am to 12pm gather in the Library’s Community Learning Center to talk about the ins and outs of having backyard chickens. From cute baby chicks, to the freshest eggs you can get, to the required permits, this event is about the realities of having a small flock. Click here to register.  

How to get help paying energy bills

Do you need help paying energy bills? You may qualify for federal aid. 

On April 9th, from 2 to 4pm a representative from Spectrum Community Services will be on site at the Downtown Hayward Public Library to accept applications and answer questions about the Low Income Home Energy (LIHEAP) assistance program, LIHEAP, helps qualified households with a one-time-per-program-year payment on their energy bill. Applications for this program are available in the Community Resource Area on the first floor of the Downtown Hayward Library.  

Please bring copies of: 

  1. Your current energy bill, including shutoff notice, if you have one. 

  2. Proof of monthly income. 

  3. U.S. government-issued ID.  

A Spectrum representative will be available 2-4pm on the second Tuesday of every month at the Downtown Hayward Library. 


  

Third Annual Plant Swap

Calling all green thumbs! April 13th at Heritage Plaza, the Hayward Public Library is hosting its 3rd Annual Plant Swap. From 11am-12pm Hayward residents are invited to take home plants their neighbors have brought or to donate some plants of their own. Bringing a plant is not required to attend.  

Repair coaching sessions

On April 27th, the Hayward Public Library is hosting its first Repair Coaching Session at the Downtown Library in the Fremont Bank Room. Repair Coaching Sessions are fun community-based workshops where neighbors, friends, and families work collectively to learn how to repair broken items. We’ll provide a workspace, specialty tools, and volunteer Coaches to help you troubleshoot and provide routine maintenance to your household items and appliances! Stop by between 11am and 2pm and click here to register so that the coaches can be prepared to assist you in repairing your item.
