The 21st Century Library & Community Learning Center is Turning 5!
September 14, 2024
Five years ago, on September 14th, 2019, to the pounding of taiko drums and the pounding with joy of our hearts, our 21st Century Library & Community Learning Center opened its doors. The building was not even complete, but the community had waited a long time for this; as we saw the smiling faces streaming in, we knew we had done the right thing. After all, we had a roof, books, computers, and restrooms. So it was on that day that a beautiful love affair started between our community and the gorgeous Downtown Library, as it is popularly and affectionately called.
What a journey it has been! All that excitement—and then, exactly six months after the Downtown Library opened, we had to shut our doors because of the pandemic. But by then your Hayward Public Library team was ready for anything. We pivoted, and in 24 hours we had set up a system for issuing online cards so people could use our online services without leaving their homes. And within days we had started new services like curbside delivery and pre-packaged book bundles to replace coming in and browsing the shelves.
We are now out of the pandemic. Our Downtown Library is finally complete and we are utilizing this 58,000 sf Zero Net Energy and LEED Platinum building to capacity. Well over a million guests have walked through our doors, and we have had more than a thousand storytimes and programs for children, and many, many more for adults. How far we have come from our earliest roots!
Though there is some disagreement about when exactly “Hayward Public Library” started, we know that we can trace our roots back to the library that was started in 1867 by the Good Templars Society. Back in those days the town library, like the post office, moved around to various buildings as space was available. 1893, the town’s library settled into a shared space in a carriage shop near B and First Streets.
Then in 1905, the wealthy industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who was a strong believer in the power of libraries, gave the city $10,000 to build our first permanent library. Unfortunately, the 1906 Great San Francisco earthquake hit us, heavily damaging the building. Mr.Carnegie gave us additional funds for repairs, though, and the building opened to the public later that same year. |
The Carnegie library continued to serve the community from that building until 1951, when Hayward got a new 35,000-square-foot building. Over the next half-century the population of Hayward multiplied more than 10 times, from 14,000 to over 140,000, and this old building was fast deteriorating. |
In 2014, Hayward voters passed Measure C, a half-cent sales tax measure for the building and improvement of library facilities, among other things. And then we fast forward to that beautiful day in September, five years ago, as you all walked happily into our new library. |
Please join us on Saturday, September 14th, this year as we celebrate our beautiful library and five amazing years of service. Come in and let us personally say “Thank you” to each and every one of you for your support! And be sure to check out some of our special 5th anniversary programs:
