Russell City Restorative Justice Project

Russell City Community,

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our second Russell City Reparative Justice Project meeting. For those who were not able to make it, we did record the session and aim to publish it to the project site later this week.

As a quick recap, the following decisions were made by the group assembled:

1. The steering committee will consist of 11 individuals and 2 alternates. You may nominate up to 11 individuals for consideration here.

2. The nominations schedule is as follows:

  • Tues 10/11 – Nominees Informed

  • Thur 10/14 – Deadline to Accept Nomination

  • Thur 10/20 – Candidate Speeches (Community Meeting 3) a link for voting will be sent after Community Meeting 3.

3. Each nominee should answer the following questions:

  • Who are you? Describe your background and your qualifications.

  • We’re anticipating that this could require 5-7 hours per week. Are you able to make this time commitment?

  • What’s your connection to Russell City?

  • From your perspective, what happened to Russell City, why do you think it happened, and how did it affect your family?

  • What meaningful value or expertise can you bring to the committee? Tell us about your experience working in a team or community-based process.

  • What is your purpose for being here? As a member of the committee, what do you want to achieve? At the end of the day, what would you want to see happen and what are you willing to do to get us there?

As a reminder from our first meeting, the Steering Committee Member’s Role is to:

  • Serve as representatives of the Russell City Community in communications between the City of Hayward and the larger Russell City community
  • Make decisions for the Russell City community
  • Maintain communications of any developments and decisions to the Russell City community

Steering Committee Members will be expected to attend monthly meetings during the current phase (II) of the project. These meetings will be approximately 2-3 hours long. They will also be expected to communicate with other community members outside of the monthly meetings, which could account for another 3-5 hours per week. In the next phase (III) of the project, the Steering Committee will set their own meeting schedule and due to the nature of the work that needs to be completed, the number of hours working outside of the meetings may increase to 5-7 hours per week.

All the information above will be shared with individuals who accept the nomination, so they will be prepared to speak during our third community meeting (Thursday, Oct. 20).

Please let me know if you have questions.

Thank you,
Regina Youngblood
