Get Ready For Fall Gardening!

As the season is changing so are our gardens! It is that time of the year where we harvest fruits and vegetables, collect seeds, and plant our winter veggies. The Hayward Public Library has a unique community seed exchange program where you can check out seeds and can return seeds that you have saved to share with others. Membership to the Seed Lending Library is free and provides resources for beginners to get started

Environmental Leadership Awards

At a ceremony last month, Alameda County public agency StopWaste announced the winners of this year’s Environmental Leadership Awards. Food distributor Vesta Foodservice and nonprofit Spectrum Community Services—both based in Hayward—were among the six entities honored.  


The annual awards program recognizes Alameda County organizations for their leadership and innovations in advancing environmental sustainability, waste prevention, and contributions to building healthy, climate-resilient communities.

Presented by scientist and storyteller Bob Lewis, winner of the American Birding Association's Chandler Robbins Award for excellence in teaching. His life list includes more than 5,000 birds, and he has a story for each of them.
