Earth Month Highlights: 19 students win Hayward’s Poster and Writing Contest; record-breaking turnout for Earth Day Litter Pick-up and Community Fair

This April the City of Hayward celebrated Earth Day, hosting the 2024 Earth Day Poster and Writing Contest for K-12 students and the 41st Annual Earth Day Clean-Up and Community Fair.


The Poster and Writing Contest received over 480 entries from 42 schools, with 19 winners honored by the City Council on April 16th. On April 20th, a successful Earth Day event at Weekes Park included a city-wide cleanup with 300 volunteers, resulting in the collection of 20-25 yards of trash. Read the full article to learn more.

Hayward promotes efficient irrigation practices

As temperatures rise and summer approaches, residents of Hayward are gearing up to reactivate their automated irrigation systems. In light of this, the City of Hayward is urging residents to conduct an irrigation tune-up to ensure water is used efficiently. 


Check irrigation systems for leaks, clogged, broken, or missing sprinkler heads, and examine points where sprinkler heads connect to pipes or hoses. Read the article for City resources and tips to save water.

May is Bike Month! To celebrate, the City of Hayward, Bike East Bay, and several other organizations are hosting events throughout the East Bay.

SAVE THE DATE! Climate Action Public Hearing - Wednesday August 7

Please save the date for a public hearing on climate action on Wednesday, August 7 at 6pm. The City of Hayward is partnering with the Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative hearing to support a petition that has been filed with the EPA to push for more action to phase out the use of fossil fuels. Plan to attend and provide testimony. Registration for the event will open soon. Sign up here to receive updates. 

Show and tell in the garden: Keeping the summer garden healthy

Saturday, June 8th from 10:30am-11:30am Master Gardeners will explain do’s and don’ts of gardening in Hayward using examples from the Hayward UC Demonstration Garden. The event will take place at the Hayward Community Garden, located at 25051 Whitman Avenue. The community garden park includes a shaded education center, a greenhouse, potting tables, and a secure tool shed. Bring your gardening questions! See some amazing vegetable gardens! Learn techniques for minimizing pest damage and disease control. No pre-registration necessary!

The street parties, held June 20, July 18, and August 15 on B St. and Main St., are public events with no admission fee. These lively gatherings unite our community, offering an eclectic mix of live music, delectable foods, and unique shopping experiences. The #HaywardBeautiful Yard Contest encourages Hayward residents to Keep Hayward Clean, Green, and Beautiful by acknowledging the hard work that goes into a bay friendly yard.  The contest is sponsored by the Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task Force. Nominations will be accepted until October 1st, 2024.

  • First-place winner will receive a $100 gift card

  • Second-place winner will receive a $75 gift card

  • Third place will receive a $50 gift card
