Re-CAP: Hayward's updated Climate Action Plan (CAP)

On Tuesday, January 30th, the City of Hayward's updated draft Climate Action Plan (CAP) will be presented to the City Council for adoption as an amendment to the City's General Plan. This update builds upon Hayward's current CAP, adopted in 2014, and provides strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in alignment with the City and State's GHG reduction goals. The City of Hayward’s fight against food waste

The City of Hayward is fighting food insecurity. Since the introduction of Senate Bill 1383, food generating businesses have been mandated to donate excess edible food to food recovery organizations. These organizations collect edible food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute it to people in need. This collaborative effort fills in gaps in food distribution and promotes sustainability.

Decoding plastic recycling in California

When trying to recycle plastic it can be tricky to know what items can be recycled and what can’t. Almost every plastic bottle or container has a recycling symbol numbered between 1-7, usually stamped on the bottom. These symbols indicate the type of plastic used in each product, yet not all plastics are equally recyclable. CalRecycle, California's recycling authority, recently released a list of materials that are considered recyclable. Read the full article to for the latest recycling rules.

Keep Hayward Clean and Green with Adopt-A-Block!

Looking for ways to get involved your community? The City of Hayward is seeking volunteer groups to Adopt-A-Block! As a volunteer, you can "adopt" an area to keep litter-free for a period of two years. Anyone can adopt a block and all ages are welcome to participate in clean-ups.

To report downed or dangling power lines, call 9-1-1 immediately and then Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) at (800) 743-5000.


Pre-filled sandbags are available throughout the Winter and Spring months (while supplies last) for community members to pick up outside the Hayward Animal Shelter at 16 Barnes Court. Additionally, a self-service station at this address allows residents to fill their own sandbags. For questions about sandbags call the Hayward Streets Division between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. at (510) 881-7745.


To report fallen trees or branches use Access Hayward or call Landscape Maintenance at (510) 583-8906 (Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3 p. m.) to report a tree branch or tree trunk that is impeding a building, sidewalk, or street. Tree emergency calls after hours should be made to the Police Department at (510) 293-7272. If someone's life or health is endangered, please dial 911 immediately.


If there is a street light outage, malfunction or damage, write down the streetlight identifying pole number that is posted on the pole. Report the problem either through Access Hayward or by calling Transportation at (510) 583-4730.


For sewer emergencies during work hours, call Utilities at 510.881.7967. For after-hours and weekend emergencies, call Police Dispatch at (510) 293-7000. Please do not use Access Hayward for sewer issues, as this will delay the response time. Please call in any sewer issues at one of the numbers above.

In celebration of Earth Day the City of Hayward is calling all Hayward Students to enter in the 41st Annual Earth Day Poster and Writing Contest. The entries may focus on environmental topics including water conservation, renewable energy, environmental justice and more! Two winners for poster entries and two winners for poem/essay entries will be selected from each grade category: K-1st Grade, 2nd-3rd Grade, 4th-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade, and 9th-12th Grade. First Place winners will receive a $200 gift card and Second Place winners will receive a $150 gift card. Click here for a full list of eligible topics and rules.  

2024 Waste Prevention Grants from StopWaste

Calling all Hayward businesses, non-profits, and institutions! StopWaste is offering grants with a total of $1.1 million available in funding for waste-reduction projects in the following six categories. 

  • Food Waste Prevention & Recovery (up to $30,000 per grant) 

  • Surplus Food Donation Equipment (nonprofits only, up to $10,000 per grant) 

  • Community Food Systems (up to $10,000 per grant) 

  • Reusable Foodware (up to $25,000 per grant) 

  • Reuse & Repair (up to $25,000 per grant) 

  • Reusable Transport Packaging Equipment (up to $10,000 per grant) 

The focus is on innovative approaches to preventing waste in Alameda County and supporting local communities. For details visit www.StopWaste.org/Grants  Application deadline is March 14, 2024.

Apply to Join Ava’s Community Advisory Committee! 


Ava Community Energy’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is made up of residents and business owners from across Ava’s service area. The CAC acts as a liaison between community stakeholders and Ava’s Board of Directors, holding public committee meetings on a regular basis. Members are expected to attend regular, monthly meetings, which typically take place in the evening hours on the third Monday of the month.
