The Russell City Commemorative Mural next to the text: Russell City Reparative Justice Project

Greetings Russell City Community,

We’re resending this to include the board letter for item #129. We want to make you aware of two major milestones involving the Russell City Redress Fund that are coming before the Alameda County Board of Supervisors at its upcoming meeting this coming Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The Board of Supervisors has scheduled agenda item #129 for 3 p.m. to approve a formal agreement between the County of Alameda and City of Hayward, called a Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, to jointly administer the Russell City Redress Fund.  This Fund has been established to address the historical harm to former Russell City residents and their descendants caused by the seizure of Russell City during the 1960s.

The Board also will be asked to authorize the Alameda County Auditor-Controller to issue redress payments on behalf of the Fund to eligible recipients consistent with guidelines being finalized by the County and the City pursuant to the MOU between the two agencies.

There is information at the bottom of this email explaining how to watch and/or attend the Board of Supervisors meeting in person or online.

Today, the Russell City Redress Fund stands at $1.3 million—with contributions totaling $950,000 from the County of Alameda, $250,000 from the City of Hayward and $100,000 from the Alameda County Office of Education.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Russell City community for taking the time to participate in last year’s Redress Fund survey. Your thoughtful comments, perspectives, and suggestions have been invaluable in helping shape the development of the Redress Fund guidelines. Community input has been an important part of this effort, and your continued engagement has been invaluable.

To aid in communication, the joint County-City Redress Fund Working Group has established an email address for former Russell City residents and family members to ask questions. The phone number is (510) 272-6684. The email address is russellcityredress@acgov.org.

We thank you for your interest and patience as we formalize and complete these important steps in the acknowledgment of past wrongs and work toward repair of harms caused by the destruction of Russell City.

Sincerely,

The Russell City Redress Fund Working Group
