Keynote speaker, performances set for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration 

Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell, the first African American woman to serve on the Superior Court of Santa Clara County (from 1988 to 2001), will deliver the keynote address at the City of Hayward’s 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration.

Visit the Hayward Animal Shelter for these December events

The Hayward Animal Shelter is hosting several events throughout the month of December and offering reduced adoptions through the Bissell Foundation’s Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope campaign until Dec. 12. During the campaign, almost all pet adoption fees are reduced to $70, plus a $15 microchip fee and a $17 Hayward dog licensing fee for City residents.

Hayward legislation clarifies responsibility, provides resources for sidewalk repair 

The Hayward City Council recently approved legislation to make clear that maintenance and repair of sidewalks is the responsibility of adjacent property owners under state law and to protect the City from legal liability for injuries resulting from dangerous sidewalk conditions.

City of Hayward to adjust services, operating hours during winter holidays  

City Hall is closed, and nonessential municipal services will be paused from Monday, Dec. 22, 2025, to Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, in observance of the winter end-of-year holidays. City Hall will reopen Monday, Jan. 5, and City Hall-based departments will resume normal operations on that date. More information on the winter closure is available here
